Where do you typically paint as a street artist?

Hi everybody!
I'm doing a project on graffiti and street art for my BFA currently, and was wondering what areas/locations artists typically seek out in regard to creating street art? I'm currently trying to find a connection between abandoned buildings/sites and street art/graffiti.
